Can art really help with your mental health? Each one of us is born with the power to express ourselves. There are many different ways to express our feelings and art is a great example. Anyone can be an artist, anyone can use art as a way to express feelings and emotions. You may not be the next Picasso or Van Gough but that’s ok. You don’t have to share your art with the world, you can use it as a way to improve your mental health and bring yourself joy. From art journaling to painting, to simply using a colouring book; there are so many different art mediums to pick from that you’re bound to find something you enjoy. In today’s post, I’m going to explore five reasons why art is good for your mental health.
1 – Art relieves stress and anxiety
Art is very calming, it gives you a purpose and something to focus on. If you’re feeling stressed and anxious you probably have a lot of thoughts whirling around in your head. Art will create a distraction from this which will help relieve your symptoms of stress and anxiety.
2 – Art allows expression without using words
Sometimes if you’re suffering with your mental health it can be hard to talk about. It’s hard to find the words to say to tell people how you’re feeling. By using art techniques such as colour and shapes you’re able to express how you’re feeling without having to use any words. Sometimes just getting things down on paper in the form of art will help to lift any negative feelings you may be experiencing.
3 – Art boosts self-esteem
Art doesn’t have to just be about painting pictures and drawing. Activities such as keeping an art journal or creating a gratitude journal can really help with our self-esteem. For example, if you create an art journal you could create a page about your hopes and wishes for the future. This will help give you a positive lift that you need and can help to boost your self-esteem.
4 – Art encourages creative thinking
Creating art makes us think outside of the box, we’re thinking in creative ways to solve a problem. Exploring different mediums and trying new ideas will help to develop the mind as a critical thinker and will help us with making choices. This helps to build our confidence and can have really positive effects on our mental wellbeing.
5 – Art can improve quality of life
Art can provide escapism from everyday life. It gives us the focus and energy that we need when we’re feeling overwhelmed and down. Had a bad day at work? There’s nothing stopping you from coming home and doing some colouring as a way to escape from negative feelings. Feeling unwell? Why not try using art as a distraction and a reminder that there are better days ahead.
Art doesn’t have to be an expensive hobby. You can practice art with simply a pad of paper and some pens. Art is exactly what you make it; if you want to go out and buy yourself an art journal and some supplies then go for it but if you simply want to use some pens and paper that you have laying around the house then that’s ok too!
